Must-Have VS Code Extensions for Every Dev in 2026

Discover essential VS Code extensions that will boost your coding efficiency and enhance your development experience.

So you want to learn about the best VS Code extensions?

Been meaning to write about this for a while, honestly. I struggled with finding the right tools for months, so here's what I learned. When I first tried VS Code, I made this stupid mistake of not using any extensions. Yep, coding in plain vanilla. Pro tip from someone who's been there: Use extensions!

The Magic of Extensions

Honestly, it took me weeks to figure this out: extensions can supercharge your development experience. I still remember the frustration of manually formatting my code. Then I discovered Prettier. Dude, it's like having a genie for your code. Here's what actually worked for me after tons of trial and error:

1. Prettier - Code Formatter

Prettier is like the fairy godmother of code formatting. Just install, and boom, beautifully formatted code. Trust me, this snippet saved my project:

{
  "editor.formatOnSave": true
}

Copy-paste this into your settings, and you're golden. If you're like me, you've probably wondered how others keep their code so neat. Well, now you know! 😊

2. Live Server

In my latest project, I used Live Server to preview changes on the fly. No more manual refreshing. Spoiler: it took me 3 hours to debug what was a typo - don't be me. Here's the magic:

"open-in-browser": "Ctrl+Shift+B or Cmd+Shift+B"

Btw, I wrote about setting up a local development environment last week - check it out!

3. GitLens

If you're like me, you've probably been lost in commit history before. GitLens gives you superpowers to visualize code authorship. I personally prefer it over the default Git integration in VS Code. Give it a try!

4. Docker

This is part of my DevOps series, see more here. The Docker extension helped me manage containers directly from VS Code. I still remember the shock of how much easier my workflow became. Here's how I set it up:

"docker.attachShellCommand.windows": "docker exec -it  sh"

And one more thing before I forget, this is based on my personal experience, not official docs. Feel free to correct me in the comments if there's a better approach!

5. Bracket Pair Colorizer

Have you ever felt lost in a sea of curly braces? Bracket Pair Colorizer saved my sanity more times than I can count. It color-codes matching brackets, and honestly, my eyes thanked me.

If you enjoyed this, you might like my post on developer productivity tools. Try these extensions out and let me know how it goes! Drop a comment if you get stuck anywhere. I'll update this post if I find something better.
